Rusa combines distinctive church architecture with a park that is also significant to the city’s history. There is also the Local History Museum and several themed excursions. This gives you different ways to explore the town: sacred architecture, historic sites, plant diversity or museum collections. If you’re looking for accommodation in Rusa, it helps to decide in advance which of these interests you’d like to focus on during your stay.

Churches and architectural history

White churches from the 18th and 19th centuries shape Rusa’s cityscape. Two buildings bring this period to life: the Resurrection Cathedral was built in 1721 with contributions from parishioners and benefactors; the stone Church of St. Demetrius of Thessaloniki was built in 1792. The dates reflect different periods of construction; for the cathedral, the involvement of the parish and benefactors is part of its history, while the stone construction of the Church of St. Demetrius is specifically noted. This lets you appreciate the churches not only as individual attractions, but also in terms of their construction dates, materials and origins.

Gorodok Park and historic sites

Gorodok Park is also a botanical garden: more than 70 tree species and 40 shrub species make up its diverse plant life. At the same time, the park is a historic site in Rusa; the Rusa Kremlin once stood there. The park’s botanical diversity and the city’s history offer two different perspectives on the same place. If you appreciate both green spaces and history, you’ll find both here.

Excursions and the Local History Museum

The walking tour of the old streets offered by the Local History Museum includes a visit to the park and is titled “Peshekhodnaya progulka po starinnym ulitsam Ruzy.” On the “Ruzskiy kreml Gorodok” excursion, visitors see the Rusa settlement site, an archaeological monument of federal significance, and learn about the city’s history. Another museum excursion is called “Pravoslavnoye khramovoye zodchestvo.” The tours cover distinct themes: old streets with a park visit, the settlement site with the city’s history, and Orthodox church architecture. Check with the museum before your visit to find out which excursions are available on your chosen date.

The Local History Museum’s main collection comprises 23 collections, including icons, books, weapons, paintings, graphics, sculptures, photographs and postcards. The museum also regularly holds exhibitions featuring artists’ works, including works from the Gorokhov and Ketov artist dynasties. The collections and exhibitions offer different ways to explore the museum: a broad look at various groups of objects and a recurring focus on artists’ works.

The Local History Museum is currently housed in a 19th-century merchant’s house in the city center. As locations can change, check the current address before your visit.

A trip to the surrounding area

In the wider region around Rusa, you can visit princely estates that are now used for walks. They are enjoyed much like parks; in the past, nobles went there to hunt. If you’d like to explore the surrounding area too, the estates add a historic hunting connection to your visit.
