Pushchino – A Science City on the Oka
Accommodation in Pushchino
Pushchino was established in the mid-20th century on the high bank of the Oka as a science city. The city was conceived as an ideal city for scientists and is one of the few urban planning utopias of Soviet modernism to have been realized. Its architectural heritage and history make the place interesting to visitors who want to see urban planning as part of local history.
Urban Planning and the History of Science
A city tour of Pushchino takes visitors to the main building of the Institute of Biophysics and the “Kletka” building; the program also includes a visit to an artist’s studio in the House of Postgraduates and Trainees. From the roof of this building, there is a panoramic view of the Oka and the Prioksko-Terrasny Nature Reserve. The itinerary is approximate; details are confirmed on request. An application must be submitted at least two weeks before the planned tour to visit the institute.
The Museum of Ecology and Local History in Pushchino has a permanent exhibition in four halls. It includes geological, archaeological, biological, and other materials, as well as the city’s history, ethnography, the history of technology, and commemorative objects. Nature and science topics are thus presented alongside the history of the place and its technological development, complementing the architectural perspective on the science city.
Attractions Along the Ecological Trail
Attractions along the ecological trail in Pushchino include the Pushchino Gorodishche and the partly ruined historic Pushchino-na-Oke estate. The “Karstovy” nature reserve and Pushchino Waterfall are also along the trail. Historic sites are therefore found alongside a protected area and a waterfall, without reducing these attractions to a single type of excursion destination.
Walking Trails in the Surrounding Area
Pushchino is part of the cooperation zone of the Prioksko-Terrasny Biosphere Reserve in Moscow Oblast. Near the destination, two ecological trails offer different types of visits. The “Doroga k zubram” trail includes a visit to the Central Bison Breeding Nursery and the Nature Museum. It is open daily year-round, except on December 31 and January 1; visits are only possible with a guide.
“Skvoz' listvu,” by contrast, is intended for independent visits without a guide. The trail is eight meters above the ground and consists of ten information platforms connected by suspension bridges. Its season runs from April to November, weather permitting.
When planning your visit, the two trails differ mainly in whether a guide is required and when they are open: “Doroga k zubram” can only be visited with a guide and is open year-round, apart from the holidays mentioned above. “Skvoz' listvu” is intended for independent visits, but is seasonal and weather-dependent. You can plan your outing according to the type of visit and time of year that suit your stay.
