Babkino is linked to a distinct cultural history through Anton Chekhov’s summer stays and the visits of the painter Isaac Levitan. Chekhov spent the summer months of 1885, 1886 and 1887 at the Kiselev family estate in the village. Levitan also often visited Babkino. The former estate, its surroundings along the Istra and the memorials added later offer different ways of exploring this shared connection to the place.

Chekhov, Levitan and the Babkino Estate

Levitan’s connection to the place developed differently: he first stayed in the nearby village of Maksimovka, then moved into a separate wing of Babkino Estate. Chekhov’s connection was shaped by summer stays in three consecutive years, while Levitan’s was marked by frequent visits and, later, by living at the estate. To understand Babkino’s cultural history, it is worth distinguishing between these paths: both artists are linked to the place, but not in the same way. Their recurring summer stays and the move from the neighboring village to the estate can thus be seen as distinct stages.

The historic landscape along the Istra

The former main house of the estate stood high above the banks of the Istra. From there, the view stretched across the surrounding area to the village of Safontyevo on the horizon and Daraganovsky Forest to the right. This historic vista connects the riverbank, village and forest with the site of the house. Only remnants of the estate’s former landscaped park remain. Both the view described and the surviving park remnants are therefore part of the history of the former estate landscape.

Literature and remembrance

There is also a literary connection to the river: a bathhouse once stood on the banks of the Istra by Babkino Estate. Its construction inspired Chekhov’s short story “The Burbot.” This episode adds another kind of trace to the biographical stays: a building by the river became the starting point for a literary work.

In Babkino, the three-meter-high white-stone bas-relief “Chekhov and Levitan” was installed beside a memorial stone. It was ceremonially unveiled on October 15, 2008, ahead of the 150th anniversary of A. P. Chekhov’s birth. The relief’s height, material and placement make it a tangible memorial; its date places it in a later period of commemoration than the historical stays at the estate.

Babkino’s cultural history can be viewed from three angles: the artists’ lives, the literary connection by the river and the later commemorations. If you are especially interested in Chekhov’s work, “The Burbot” adds a specific literary connection to the biographical stays. For a closer look at the estate landscape, the location of the former house and the remnants of the park are more fitting points of reference.
